Welcome to the theory to action podcast, where we examine the timeless treasures of wisdom from the great books in less time to help you take action immediately, and ultimately to create and lead a flourishing life. Now, here's your host, David Kaiser.

Hello, I am David and welcome back to another Mojo minute. In our last Mojo minute, we started to unpack, Scott Adams, his brilliant phrase goals are for losers, and why and how systems crush goals every time. And this comes from his popular book, How to Fail at Almost everything and still win big, which is a great read, by the way, and is quickly becoming my favorite book on success. And here's a short recap of the book. But I encourage you to go back and listen to our previous Mojo.

And if you haven't had a chance to catch that one yet. Let's go to the book, the systems versus goal model can be applied to most human endeavors. In the world of dieting, losing 20 pounds is a goal. But eating right is a system. And the exercise realm, running a marathon in under four hours is a goal. But exercising daily is a system. And in business, making a million dollars is a goal. But being a serial entrepreneur is a system. Unquote. And that is just fantastic. Fantastic advice. And he goes on to say, for our purposes, let's say a goal is a specific object, I'm sorry, a specific objective that you either achieve or don't sometime in the future. And a system is something you do on a regular basis that increases your odds of happiness. In the long run. If you do something every day, it's a system. And if you're waiting to achieve it someday in the future, it's a goal, unquote.

So there we go, systems versus goals. systems works and goals are for losers. I just love saying that. Seriously, though, goals, set our minds up for failure. And let's pivot to setting up our system so we don't fail. And the first step in setting up our system, so we don't fail, is to set up your mindset, we have to get our minds right first, so that we can then build the system. don't scoff at this. It's it's essential. It's kind of like going to war. It's kind of a war within yourself, so to speak. And a great quote from the Chinese general. From the Chinese general in the military strategists from the fifth century BC Sunsoo tells us victorious Warriors win first, and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first, and then seek to win. Unquote. It's all about their mindset. Or a more contemporary quote, is this. Whether you think you can or you think you can't, either way, you're right. Unquote. And that comes to us from the great Henry Ford. Preparation of mindset are critical. And we'll talk more about this next week. But let's get back to Scott Adams because he can help us. Quote, one of the best pieces of advice that I ever heard, go something like this. If you want success figure, figure out the price, and then pay it. It sounds trivial and obvious, but if you unpack the idea, it has extraordinary power. I know a lot of people who wish they were rich or famous or otherwise fabulous. They wish they had yachts and servants and castles and they wish they could travel the world and their own private jets. But these are mere wishes. Few of these wishful people have decided to have any of the things they wish for. It's a key difference. For once you decide you take action, wishing starts in the mind and generally stays there, unquote.

Just another powerful, powerful paragraph from this book. So deciding verse is wishing, just like systems versus goals? Deciding versus wishing. And here's the final quote. When you decide to be successful in a big way, it means you acknowledge the price and you're willing to pay for it. Unquote.

So now let's go to you think about the number one goal you want to achieve. And now pivot and think about the system to get you to that goal. What's the process? What's the daily workflow of the system? And now, what's the price to accomplish that? What's the price you're going to need to pay? Is it time? Is it money? Is it a combination of both. And then you want to pay for it daily. As an example, for me in creating these Mojo minutes, it was both time and money. Time in about an hour a day in writing, and then two to three hours a week in recording edits in production. And money, I had to invest in the right equipment to make all of this sound good. Let's face it, there's nothing worse than bad audio. So I wanted my audio to sound crisp and clear. So there's money to invest in that. So in today's module minute, let's answer these questions to ourselves.

And Scott Adams can help us with some final advice. Successful people don't wish for success, they decide to pursue it. And to pursue it effectively, they need a system. Success always has a price. But the reality is the price is negotiable. If you pick the right system, the price will be a lot nearer to what you're willing to pay. I can't change the fact that the success requires a lot of hard work. But if you learn to appreciate the power of systems over goals, it might lower the price of success, just enough to make it worth ago. Unquote. So back to you. What's the system you need to create to reach your number one goal? And most likely, you will blow past that goal? Because that's just how systems work. But I know you're in the very beginning stages. What's the system you need to create to reach your number one goal? And then decide what's the price you need to pay to reach your number one goal? And then ask yourself after all that preparation is done. Are you willing to pay that price?
