Welcome to the theory to action podcast, where we examine the timeless treasures of wisdom from the great books in less time to help you take action immediately, and ultimately to create and lead a flourishing life. Now, here's your host, David Kaiser.
Hello, I'm David and welcome back to another Mojo minute. In 1933, or 38th, President of the United States Calvin Coolidge passed on to eternal life. The scene in the country at the time, was one of Great Depression. Literally, it was the worldwide Great Depression of which the US stock market crash of 1929 in September and continuing into late October of 29. It contributed to that great depression. And, as of right now, our economy is slowing dramatically. And a recession looks to be on the horizon because of government overspending, of which President Coolidge surely would have had something very serious to say on the matter, unlike today's politicians who only speak of spending, spending spending. And we can take heart from the words of Coolidge in his biography. When he says if I had permitted my failures, or what seemed to me, at the time, a lack of success to to discourage me. I cannot see any way in which I would have ever made progress. Unquote.
And the great historian Amedy, shales shed some light on Coolidge and indeed, his life of constant perseverance. She writes in his in her be a biography of Coolidge, the students of Coolidge so associate college with perseverance that they often attribute to Him, a paragraph that he did not write, quote, nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not. Nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not, the world is full of educated derelicts. persistence and determination are omnipotent.
And cool. Isn't that good? That quote is fantastic. Even if the words are not attributed to Coolidge himself. They are, in fact, the truth. And Charles continues, quote, those words in fact, were printed as filler in newspapers from as early as 1910, often without an author, but they sound so much like Coolidge that people assumed he wrote them, unquote.
And Coolidge was a persevering man, and he was a persevering president from 1923 to 1929. He took over the presidency after the death of Ohio's own Warren Harding. But all this brings me back to you into me. Are we pressing on with persistence and determination each and every day? How can we get 1% better in these areas of persistence and determination no matter what the wide world is saying, or the domestic chaos is happening all around us.
So in today's Mojo minute, no matter what the future brings recession, depression, whatever. Let us remember, persistence and determination are where the real power lies, not with talent, not with genius, and not with education. After all, for the educated experts, we've been watching on television for the last 20 months of this worldwide pandemic of COVID 19. Most of us agree. They are truly the educated derelicts in the world. And I hear from most of you every day, about these educated derelicts. So I hear you. So let us apply our talents and our art genius to living a focused and flourishing life and not getting caught up in the chaos around us and helping to serve those Folks around us with charity and truth with faith in God and serving our fellow man. But knowing in the end persistence and determination and living the virtues is what this world really needs and where Coolidge was right, and where the truest blessings come from.
