Hello I'm David and welcome back to another MOJO minute--leadership style

Todays installment is MOJO Minute #5 of Leadership week.

Where we are breaking down the top principles, ideas, and tactics to help you become a better leader no matter what position you are in life.

In yesterday’s MOJO Minute we discussed the importance of showing what right looks like

And we discussed leading by example for we all know that is the most powerful form of leadership.

Dont ask others to do what you yourself wouldnt do.

And now let us turn to the dichotomies inherent in both of those tactics.

Showing what right looks like can be very powerful but if you are showing everyone what right looks like all the time, you as a leader might be missing the higher view of the direction the team is going as a collective unit.

You might be failing your boss because you are showing everyone on your team what right looks like.

So there is a dichotomy.

When to get involved and help the teammate and when to trust them to have learned the job so you can keep your eye at the 10,000 foot level to see the direction of the whole team and mission.

One of the very best books i have ever read on leadership helps us to unpack these dichotomies.

It is called The Dichotomy of Leadership by fmr Navy Seals Jocko Willink and Leif Babin.

And we have an Academy Review of it at the membership site if you want to dig in deeper.

But lets unpack this idea from Jocko and Leif.

“In most cases rather than extremes, leadership requires balance.

Leaders must find the equilibrium between opposing forces that pull in opposite directions.

Being aggressive but cautious

Disciplined but not rigid

A leader but also a follower

[dichotomies apply] to almost every aspect of leadership

Achieving the proper balance in each of the many dichotomies is the most challenging aspect of leadership.”

So those words are a really powerful idea that is uncovered.    Leadership requires making tough calls.    Leadership requires balancing these dichotomies.

The best leaders are constantly self aware of these equilibriums.

Jocko and Leif go on.

Back to the book, “we wrote the Dichotomy of Leadership to help leaders understand this challenge and find the balance needed to most effectively lead and win.

No matter the arena

The balance must be achieved for optimal performance.

If a leader imposes too much authority, the team becomes reluctant to execute;

not enough, and the team has no direction.

If leaders are too aggressive, they put the team and mission at risk;

Yet if they wait too long to take action, results can be equally catastrophic.

If a leader trains his or her people too hard, they may burn out.

Yet without challenging and realistic training, the team remains unprepared for real world situations they may face.

The dichotomies go on and on, each one requiring balance.”

Thats the top of the mountain learning right there.    It doesnt get any better that that.

If you havent read this book, Dichotomy of Leadership, I would urge to go to our show page and buy it and read it ASAP.

No matter where you are in the chain of command.   This book is that good.

And i should say, if you havent read this book then you should back up and get Extreme Ownership, their first book too and read it because taking ownership, being accountable for you and your team is just as powerful of an idea.

Read both of these books together.   Again, they are a powerful combination.   The very best leadership advice i have ever read in the last 20 years of studying this stuff.

So in todays MOJO minute, let us, both you and I understand the dichotomies inherent in leadership and leading our teams.  Lets humbly lead in our families and communities and workplaces and let us always strive to find the right balance to most effectively lead and win and if we do

If we really do, then we will have created and will be leading a flourishing life by leading ourselves!

And be sure to come back tomorrow for a BONUS  MOJO leadership minute

Lets go MOJO!
