00:00:07.612 --> 00:00:20.807
Welcome to the Theory to Action podcast, where we examine the timeless treasures of wisdom from the great books in less time, to help you take action immediately and ultimately to create and lead a flourishing life.

00:00:20.807 --> 00:00:24.849
Now here's your host, david Kaiser.

00:00:34.859 --> 00:00:36.243
Hello, I am David and welcome back to another Mojo Minute.

00:00:36.243 --> 00:00:46.712
We are getting back into our old habits now, since the future is looking bright for most Americans and for most business owners, and one of those old habits is to kick off our Mojo Minutes with a quote.

00:00:46.712 --> 00:00:51.011
So with that let's roll to our first pull quote.

00:00:51.011 --> 00:00:58.088
So the problem with my company then and now is me.

00:00:58.088 --> 00:01:04.004
The problem with your company is not the economy, it's not the lack of opportunity, it's not your team.

00:01:04.004 --> 00:01:08.230
The problem is you, and that's the bad news.

00:01:08.230 --> 00:01:12.543
The good news is, if you're the problem, you're also the solution.

00:01:12.543 --> 00:01:15.930
You're the one person who can change the easiest.

00:01:15.930 --> 00:01:22.227
You can decide to grow, grow your abilities, your character, your education and your capacity.

00:01:22.227 --> 00:01:31.411
You can decide what you want to be and get about the business of becoming that person.

00:01:33.760 --> 00:01:39.873
And that great quote comes to us from Dave Ramsey's book Entra Leadership.

00:01:39.873 --> 00:01:57.216
And what I loved about the book is it's a pretty good guide to the intersection of entrepreneurship and leadership, one of which Ramsey draws his over 20 years of practical business experience.

00:01:57.216 --> 00:02:17.354
Now, the book primarily focuses on combining entrepreneurial skills with effective leadership to build and grow successful businesses, and so this notion of entre leadership is not solely about entrepreneurship and it's not solely about leadership.

00:02:17.354 --> 00:02:19.486
It's a combination of both.

00:02:19.486 --> 00:02:30.162
Now, how Ramsey defines this entre leadership is kind of clunky, but I think in the end it works In fact.

00:02:30.162 --> 00:02:34.072
Let me get out of the way and let's hear straight from Ramsey himself.

00:02:36.860 --> 00:02:42.193
A leader, according to Webster's dictionary, is someone who rules, guides and inspires others.

00:02:42.193 --> 00:02:49.846
The dictionary says an entrepreneur is someone who organizes, operates and assumes risk for a venture.

00:02:49.846 --> 00:03:10.402
The root word of entrepreneur is a French word, entreprenando sorry about my French meaning one who takes a risk, one who takes a risk.

00:03:10.402 --> 00:03:16.832
So for our purposes, entre leadership is defined as the process of leading to cause a venture to grow and prosper.

00:03:16.832 --> 00:03:21.813
Okay, like I said, it's kind of clunky, so let's put some more meat on that bone.

00:03:21.813 --> 00:03:22.355
Let's go back to the book.

00:03:22.355 --> 00:03:25.223
Put some more meat on that bone, let's go back to the book.

00:03:25.223 --> 00:03:34.616
So growing leaders was too refined and calm for me, but growing entrepreneurs was too wild and chaotic for me.

00:03:34.616 --> 00:03:42.429
So I decided we needed to grow a combination of the two, and thus the Entra leader was born.

00:03:42.429 --> 00:04:07.037
Ramsey tells us I want Entra leaders who can be passionately serving and Mavericks who have integrity, disciplined risk takers, courageous while humble, motivated visionaries, driven while loyal, influential learners.

00:04:07.037 --> 00:04:12.009
Okay, okay, we see where Ramsey's going now.

00:04:12.009 --> 00:04:13.443
And plus, we have a list.

00:04:13.443 --> 00:04:17.528
We always love lists and we have something we can dig into.

00:04:17.528 --> 00:04:21.427
That's a solid nugget of wisdom and we kind of like that here.

00:04:23.161 --> 00:04:28.072
Now, if you've been living under a rock for the last 20 years, you might not know who is Dave Ramsey.

00:04:28.072 --> 00:04:36.108
Well, he's the personal management guy in that space and he's pretty much the real deal if you've never listened to him.

00:04:36.108 --> 00:04:41.348
Susie Orman, eh, not so much Dave Ramsey, kind of a big deal.

00:04:41.348 --> 00:04:44.982
Dave Ramsey still around providing some good advice.

00:04:44.982 --> 00:04:48.166
But who is Dave Ramsey?

00:04:48.166 --> 00:04:50.009
What's his biography?

00:04:50.730 --> 00:04:54.862
Well, he, like I said, is the American radio personality.

00:04:54.862 --> 00:05:00.973
He's a financial advisor and an author known for his expertise in personal finance.

00:05:00.973 --> 00:05:10.214
He's the owner and CEO of Ramsey Solutions and he co-hosts a nationally syndicated radio program called the Ramsey Show.

00:05:10.214 --> 00:05:25.855
Now, he was born September 30th or September 3rd rather, in 1960 in Antioch, tennessee, and he began his career in real estate, amassing a significant portfolio by the young age of 26.

00:05:25.855 --> 00:05:34.194
However, financial difficulties led him to file for bankruptcy at age 28.

00:05:34.194 --> 00:05:41.223
And that's the very important part of his life and part of the reason I respect him so much.

00:05:41.223 --> 00:05:52.454
Following his financial setbacks, ramsey founded the Lampo Group, now titled Ramsey Solutions in 1988, to provide financial counseling and education.

00:05:52.454 --> 00:06:00.031
And then he authored several best-selling books the Total Money Makeover and this book, entra Leadership.

00:06:00.031 --> 00:06:08.733
His work emphasizes debt-free living and financial independence, often incorporating biblical principles into his advice.

00:06:08.733 --> 00:06:21.836
Ramsey's influence extends through his radio show, which reaches millions of listeners weekly, through Financial Peace University, a program designed to teach financial literacy.

00:06:21.836 --> 00:06:35.192
Now he's known for his straightforward advice and his conservative views something I like and he's become a prominent figure in personal finance education.

00:06:35.192 --> 00:06:38.199
He's become a prominent figure in personal finance education.

00:06:40.480 --> 00:06:43.221
Now, getting back to our book of the day, this Entra Leadership.

00:06:43.221 --> 00:06:55.771
The book stresses and in fact there's some great nuggets of wisdom in this book, but the book stresses the importance of transforming dreams into actionable goals.

00:06:55.771 --> 00:07:03.637
And yes, we here at the Theory to Action podcast that's the namesake of our podcast we love that stuff.

00:07:03.637 --> 00:07:06.769
We have to transform theory into action.

00:07:06.769 --> 00:07:11.492
We can't just be librarians collecting this stuff, these ideas.

00:07:11.492 --> 00:07:27.687
We have to collect them, we have to organize them and then we have to demand ourselves, from ourselves, the concrete plans, the strategies and the implementation plans, or the implementation and the execution of those plans.

00:07:27.687 --> 00:07:32.783
And Ramsey's book helps us to get to the heart of that very fact.

00:07:34.026 --> 00:07:41.029
Now, one last quote I'm going to leave you with, because we talk about it all the time on this show, and that quote is hard work.

00:07:41.029 --> 00:07:50.613
Hard work went out of fashion maybe a decade or so ago, and probably maybe the last decade and a half or so.

00:07:50.613 --> 00:07:56.302
But hard work is a virtue, and virtues don't go out of style.

00:07:56.302 --> 00:07:58.345
They're not fads, right?

00:07:58.345 --> 00:08:04.377
So check out this great nugget of wisdom from Ramsey about 15 years of being in business.

00:08:04.377 --> 00:08:18.276
Going back to the book, if you can find someone who can stay on mission, on task, with focused intensity for an entire decade, I will show you someone who is world-class in their chosen area of endeavor.

00:08:18.276 --> 00:08:21.233
They're likely a national brand or will be.

00:08:21.964 --> 00:08:33.020
In his great book, the Outliers, malcolm Gladwell writes that one of the keys to unusual heights of success is spending 10,000 hours of practice at your chosen craft.

00:08:33.020 --> 00:08:40.418
The Beatles, the rock band, spent countless hours playing at summer festivals before you ever heard of them.

00:08:40.418 --> 00:08:47.778
Peyton Manning, widely regarded as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play football, has been known for his work ethic since he was a child.

00:08:47.778 --> 00:08:59.580
I just won my first Marconi Award, which is essentially the Academy Award for radio and afterward counted up that I had been on the air over 10,000 hours.

00:08:59.580 --> 00:09:07.298
Remember, work your tail off for 15 years and you're suddenly an overnight success.

00:09:07.298 --> 00:09:11.892
Ha, an overnight success, is that not great?

00:09:11.892 --> 00:09:14.236
What's the quote?

00:09:14.236 --> 00:09:24.539
Again, I just won my first Marconi Award, which is essentially the Academy Award for radio, and after work, counted up that I had been on the air for over 10,000 hours.

00:09:24.539 --> 00:09:33.009
Remember, work your tail off for 15 years and suddenly you're an overnight success 10,000 hours.

00:09:33.009 --> 00:09:35.674
Now, where have we heard that before?

00:09:35.674 --> 00:09:39.503
Ah, talent is Overrated.

00:09:39.503 --> 00:09:43.056
By Jeff Colvin, a great, fantastic book.

00:09:43.056 --> 00:09:44.360
We reviewed it.

00:09:44.360 --> 00:09:47.169
Check out that Academy review in the members only section.

00:09:47.169 --> 00:09:49.636
But what does it say?

00:09:49.636 --> 00:09:54.008
What does talent is overrated say about this 10,000 hours?

00:09:54.008 --> 00:09:55.591
Let's go to that book.

00:09:57.133 --> 00:10:14.952
In a famous study of chess players, nobel prize winner Herbert Simon and William Chase proposed the 10-year rule Based on their observation that no one seemed to reach the top ranks of chess players without a decade or so of intensive study, and some required much more time.

00:10:14.952 --> 00:10:18.720
Even Bobby Fischer was not an exception.

00:10:18.720 --> 00:10:25.586
When he had become a grandmaster at age 16, he had been studying chess intensively for nine years.

00:10:25.586 --> 00:10:31.479
Subsequent research in a wide range of fields has substantiated the 10-year rule.

00:10:31.479 --> 00:10:49.596
Everywhere the researchers have looked in math, science, musical composition, swimming, x-ray diagnosis, tennis, literature no one, not even the most talented performers, became great without at least 10 years of very hard preparation.

00:10:49.596 --> 00:10:54.672
10 years, 10 years or 10,000 hours.

00:10:54.672 --> 00:11:00.256
Ramsey said it took him 15 years before he was even noticed and won an award.

00:11:01.706 --> 00:11:03.653
Now you remember what Carol Dweck said?

00:11:03.653 --> 00:11:10.118
She wrote the book Mindset, another fantastic book we have reviewed as an Academy review.

00:11:10.118 --> 00:11:11.768
Check out the members area for that one.

00:11:11.768 --> 00:11:16.899
Carol says is it talent or ability or mindset?

00:11:16.899 --> 00:11:23.116
Was it Mozart's musical ability or the fact that he worked till his hands were deformed?

00:11:23.116 --> 00:11:34.429
Was it Darwin's scientific ability or the fact that he collected specimens nonstop from early childhood?

00:11:34.470 --> 00:11:39.379
So, as I reflected on my podcast, we just crossed 10,000 downloads.

00:11:39.379 --> 00:11:44.879
Not a lot by any stretch of the imagination, but not too shabby.

00:11:44.879 --> 00:11:47.909
Better than a sharp stick in the eye, as they used to say.

00:11:47.909 --> 00:11:56.557
Now, the podcast hasn't grown super fast since the beginning, but I had to ask myself the question this is not your full-time job.

00:11:56.557 --> 00:12:00.168
How many years, david, have you invested?

00:12:00.168 --> 00:12:03.975
Are you up to 10 years yet, or 10,000 hours?

00:12:03.975 --> 00:12:06.317
Nope, just three.

00:12:07.158 --> 00:12:10.688
Ah, okay, so more work is to be done then.

00:12:10.688 --> 00:12:14.336
Right, you got it and I can improve and get better.

00:12:14.336 --> 00:12:21.403
And then I can tackle how to market the podcast better and I perhaps can tackle video podcasting.

00:12:21.403 --> 00:12:25.395
That could be a good marketing technique and a good marketing strategy.

00:12:25.395 --> 00:12:38.470
And plus, we get great feedback from new listeners almost each and every day Content saying that the content is good, it's well-received, it's all good stuff.

00:12:38.470 --> 00:12:39.811
They like what we're putting out.

00:12:39.811 --> 00:12:53.041
And then you guys have even texted me that the long format where we do specials and discover new books and intertwine them that we bring to the podcast is all very, very good.

00:12:53.041 --> 00:12:57.716
So the future is bright and we appreciate you hanging in there with us.

00:12:57.716 --> 00:13:11.380
We just need to apply a business mindset, plus some hard work which is not going out of style, as we know and some Dave Ramsey confirmation that we're on the right track.

00:13:12.485 --> 00:13:18.759
So many thanks to this book, entree Leadership by Dave Ramsey and his 20 years of business knowledge.

00:13:18.759 --> 00:13:43.897
The book is, like we said, a good blend of leadership philosophy and practical business advice, covers a wide range of topics essential for entrepreneurs and business leaders, and I love Ramsey's personal experiences and his ethical approach to business, which makes it even more appealing to business, startups and even longtime veterans in the field.

00:13:43.897 --> 00:13:46.833
So again, the future is bright.

00:13:46.833 --> 00:13:50.234
So today's Mojo Minute how about you?

00:13:50.234 --> 00:13:52.510
Do you have a business idea?

00:13:52.510 --> 00:13:54.230

00:13:54.230 --> 00:13:55.730

00:13:55.730 --> 00:13:59.916

00:14:15.273 --> 00:14:17.317
Check out this book too.

00:14:17.317 --> 00:14:23.876

00:14:23.876 --> 00:14:26.974
Have you invested it, yes or no?

00:14:26.974 --> 00:14:29.452
How hard are you willing to work?

00:14:29.452 --> 00:14:33.575
For me, I got another seven years to keep rolling.

00:14:33.575 --> 00:14:40.414
I'll see you on the path of hard work and, as always, let's keep fighting the good fight.
