MM#326--What did HE SAY?

We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text Message

Harrison Butker isn't just a placekicker for the Kansas City Chiefs; he's a cultural commentator who's kicking us awake with his piercing insights. His recent commencement address at Benedictine College isn't just a rallying cry—it's a full-on battle cry against the dissonance between proclaimed faith and public policy, a theme that resonates throughout this episode of Theory to Action.  Equally, he decries not fulfilling our own vocation in life most especially in personal sanctity.

Let's  give you an unflinching look at the controversial aftermath of a society dripping with progressive values, as seen through Butker's uncompromising lens.

Key Points from the Episode:

  • This episode promises a journey into the heart of integrity, or the lack thereof, in our leaders today.
  • Butker calls out high-profile Catholics, from the President to the clergy, for their inconsistencies between words and actions, and I dissect the implications of these contradictions.
  • We examine the challenging terrain where personal belief systems meet the public square, questioning the responsibility one holds when wielding influence.
  • Prepare to confront the realities of our cultural and moral landscape as we scrutinize the urgent need for authenticity and reform within our institutions and within ourselves.
  • Harrison Butker's message isn't just a reflection; it's a call for a revolution in accountability.

00:00:07.612 --> 00:00:20.807
Welcome to the Theory to Action podcast, where we examine the timeless treasures of wisdom from the great books in less time, to help you take action immediately and ultimately to create and lead a flourishing life.

00:00:20.807 --> 00:00:24.849
Now here's your host, david Kaiser.

00:00:30.679 --> 00:00:33.143
Hello, I am David and welcome back to another Mojo Minute.

00:00:33.143 --> 00:00:39.914
Over this past weekend, we saw the horrific underbelly of a woke culture gone bad.

00:00:39.914 --> 00:00:46.683
Well, not just bad, but collectively out of its mind.

00:00:46.683 --> 00:00:49.432
I mean, they literally lost their minds.

00:00:49.432 --> 00:00:52.789
But what about, you might ask.

00:00:52.789 --> 00:00:58.993
Well, if you weren't looking at major media, you probably didn't know about it.

00:00:58.993 --> 00:01:00.584
But let's find out.

00:01:02.640 --> 00:01:17.709
Harrison Bucker, the 28-year-old place kicker for the NFL Kansas City Chiefs, delivered the commencement address at Benedictine College in Atchison, kansas, on Saturday, may 11, 2024.

00:01:17.709 --> 00:01:25.370
You might say, okay, yes, and he said some god-awful things.

00:01:25.370 --> 00:01:29.385
Oh, what did he say?

00:01:29.385 --> 00:01:41.090
Well, searching out for the actual words that made the radicals lose their mind was harder than trying to find the keys to a Humvee.

00:01:41.090 --> 00:01:45.783
Okay, humvees don't have keys.

00:01:45.783 --> 00:01:48.207
Keys in case you did not get that joke.

00:01:48.207 --> 00:01:51.774
Okay, on to the speech.

00:01:51.774 --> 00:02:03.266
Well, I think the first trigger, as they say on the woke radical side of the equation, the first trigger was how dare he say this?

00:02:05.209 --> 00:02:10.376
Bad policies and poor leadership have negatively impacted major life issues.

00:02:10.376 --> 00:02:27.844
Things like abortion, ivf, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as growing support for degenerate cultural values in media, all stem from the pervasiveness of disorder.

00:02:27.844 --> 00:02:32.512
Hmm, well, that's all true.

00:02:32.512 --> 00:02:33.794
What's the problem?

00:02:33.794 --> 00:02:40.330
I mean we've been experiencing bad policies and poor leadership for some time in our country.

00:02:40.330 --> 00:02:50.555
In actuality, that's not a conservative or a liberal dichotomy, that's just an all over theworld thing.

00:02:50.555 --> 00:02:54.661
I mean, poor leadership is everywhere we look, but Butker goes on.

00:02:56.626 --> 00:03:07.418
Our nation is led by a man who publicly and proudly proclaims his Catholic faith but at the same time is delusional enough to make the sign of the cross during a pro-abortion rally.

00:03:07.418 --> 00:03:18.439
He has been so vocal in his support for the murder of innocent babies that I'm sure to many people it appears that you can be both Catholic and pro-choice.

00:03:18.439 --> 00:03:20.711
He is not alone.

00:03:20.711 --> 00:03:34.341
From the man behind the COVID lockdowns to the people pushing dangerous gender ideologies onto the youth of America, they all have a glaring thing in common they are Catholic.

00:03:34.341 --> 00:03:39.977
This is an important reminder that being Catholic alone doesn't cut it.

00:03:39.977 --> 00:03:45.735
Well, that's true too.

00:03:45.735 --> 00:03:56.039
Our nation is indeed led by a man who has zero sense of his Catholic faith and what it demands of him.

00:03:56.039 --> 00:04:02.387
As we talked about last week, joe Biden is gunning for the worst president in the history of the United States.

00:04:02.387 --> 00:04:11.072
That's not hyperbole, that's demonstrable fact, objectively everywhere you look by every statistic.

00:04:11.072 --> 00:04:14.258
But let's keep going Back to the speech.

00:04:15.806 --> 00:04:18.973
Our Catholic faith has always been countercultural.

00:04:18.973 --> 00:04:26.394
Our Lord, along with countless followers, were all put to death for their adherence to her teachings.

00:04:26.394 --> 00:04:36.949
The world around us says that we should keep our beliefs to ourselves whenever they go against the tyranny of diversity, equity and inclusion.

00:04:36.949 --> 00:04:43.869
We fear speaking truth, because now, unfortunately, truth is in the minority.

00:04:43.869 --> 00:04:51.353
Congress just passed a bill where stating something as basic as the biblical teaching of who killed Jesus could land you in jail.

00:04:51.353 --> 00:05:02.586
But make no mistake before we even attempt to fix any of these issues plaguing society, we must first get our own house in order, and it starts with our leaders.

00:05:02.586 --> 00:05:09.569
The bishops and priests appointed by God as our spiritual fathers must be rightly ordered.

00:05:10.370 --> 00:05:38.735
There is not enough time today for me to list all the stories of priests and bishops misleading their flocks, but none of us can blame ignorance anymore or just blindly proclaim that is what Father said, because sadly, many priests we are looking to for leadership are the ones who prioritize their hobbies, or even photos with their dogs and matching outfits for the parish directory.

00:05:38.735 --> 00:05:44.233
Also very, very true.

00:05:44.233 --> 00:05:58.887
If we have more bishops and priests who didn't want to serve the church of nice, meaning just be nice and offer charity to everyone, we would be in a much better situation, especially culturally.

00:05:58.887 --> 00:06:04.336
But Jesus Christ did not found a church of nice.

00:06:04.336 --> 00:06:12.398
He did say love one another as I have loved you, but Jesus never allowed someone to remain in their sin.

00:06:12.398 --> 00:06:13.807
But Jesus never allowed someone to remain in their sin.

00:06:13.807 --> 00:06:16.514
He called sin as something that was actually real.

00:06:16.514 --> 00:06:27.004
You will remember he said For I did not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.

00:06:27.004 --> 00:06:32.076
If you think about that and think about that phrase, it seems for many in the world they just want to call love as love as love.

00:06:32.076 --> 00:06:35.934
But Jesus called things for what they were.

00:06:35.934 --> 00:06:39.995
There were such things as sins.

00:06:39.995 --> 00:06:44.355
Our world gets that demonstrably wrong.

00:06:45.747 --> 00:07:06.927
Now I will say that on the conservative side of the spectrum for this is who Bucker was speaking to at Benedictine College the conservative side of folks can get wrapped up more so in calling out people's sins all day and everywhere, and that is right and just.

00:07:06.927 --> 00:07:15.319
But and here is a big but Jesus also saw people with inherent dignity and value.

00:07:15.319 --> 00:07:19.956
We are all sinners and we all need to be reminded about that.

00:07:19.956 --> 00:07:24.976
But we also need to be reminded that everyone is created in the image and likeness of God.

00:07:24.976 --> 00:07:31.017
So to love your neighbor as yourself is to be able to tell them the truth in charity.

00:07:31.017 --> 00:07:40.007
For too long we have been willing to be the church of nice, and that's not the church of the truth, truth and charity.

00:07:40.007 --> 00:07:43.817
St Paul reminds us in Ephesians of this very fact.

00:07:43.817 --> 00:07:46.108
Or even to go back to Jesus.

00:07:46.108 --> 00:08:00.737
You will remember that Christ was invited to the dinner of the Pharisee and he reprimanded those Pharisees, and I'm guessing he didn't mind the human respect element when he did so.

00:08:00.737 --> 00:08:14.473
He didn't want to be just nice, but I'm also guessing that he wasn't invited back to that home of the Pharisee either after he reprimanded them.

00:08:14.473 --> 00:08:16.947
The truth is the truth.

00:08:16.947 --> 00:08:20.052
But back to the speech.

00:08:22.516 --> 00:08:30.197
As Catholics we can look to so many examples of heroic shepherds who gave their lives for their people and, ultimately, the church.

00:08:30.197 --> 00:08:37.056
We cannot buy into the lie that the things we experienced during COVID were appropriate.

00:08:37.056 --> 00:08:43.091
Over the centuries there have been great wars, great famines and, yes, even great diseases.

00:08:43.091 --> 00:08:56.919
All of that came with a level of lethality and danger, but in each of those examples church leaders leaned into their vocations and ensured that their people received the sacraments.

00:08:56.919 --> 00:09:06.860
So I guess many on the left declare this paragraph to be against the government and its wishes.

00:09:06.860 --> 00:09:10.654
To all that I say I stand with Buckner on this one too.

00:09:10.654 --> 00:09:16.850
Render unto Caesar those that are Caesar's and render unto God those that are God's.

00:09:16.850 --> 00:09:20.354
And Buckner continues to speak truth to power and to our bishops.

00:09:20.354 --> 00:09:39.004
No, today our shepherds are far more concerned with keeping the doors open to the chancery than they are with saying the difficult stuff out loud.

00:09:39.004 --> 00:09:52.975
It seems that the only time you hear from your bishops is when it's time for the annual appeal, whereas we need our bishops to be vocal about the teachings of the church, setting aside their own personal comfort and embracing their cross.

00:09:52.975 --> 00:09:56.576
Our bishops are not politicians, but shepherds.

00:09:56.576 --> 00:10:06.095
So instead of fitting into the world by going along to get along, they need to stay in their lane and lead Amen.

00:10:07.681 --> 00:10:20.850
I'm reminded when I was a kid and I had not been baptized and had not been confirmed and not had my first communion in the church, but I grew up with a father who was a fallaway Catholic from Vatican II.

00:10:20.850 --> 00:10:34.220
But I grew up with a father who was a fallaway Catholic from Vatican II, but in the 1980s most of the Catholic bishops were protesting the nuclear arms race.

00:10:34.220 --> 00:10:37.043
Now, as a child of 10 years old, I was very confused.

00:10:37.043 --> 00:10:37.965
What are they doing?

00:10:37.965 --> 00:10:43.354
Challenging and protesting the nuclear arms movement.

00:10:43.354 --> 00:10:51.779
How do they have any expertise in this?

00:10:51.779 --> 00:11:21.187
So perhaps if the bishops for a long time have, in the United States, been so out of character in leading their flocks, perhaps if they spent more time catechizing their flocks instead of protesting the nuclear arms movement, as just one example, and there's many I could cite we would be in a much better position with a Catholic lay faithful who is not properly catechized, properly catechized and truthfully.

00:11:21.187 --> 00:11:24.849
You know the bishops and the priests could say the same.

00:11:24.849 --> 00:11:37.758
You know about the Catholic lay faithful who have been suffering from 75 years of bad catechesis, most especially in Western society and in the United States and in Latin America.

00:11:37.758 --> 00:11:47.096
Plain and simple, and actually Bucker does say that.

00:11:47.116 --> 00:12:00.105
Going back to the speech, I say all of this not from a place of anger as we get the leaders we deserve, but this does make me reflect on staying in my lane and focusing on my own vocation and how I can be a better father and husband and live in the world but not be of it.

00:12:00.105 --> 00:12:12.966
Focusing on my vocation while praying and fasting for these men will do more for the church than me complaining about her leaders Right on, right on.

00:12:12.966 --> 00:12:31.844
So yes, us Catholics, lay folk, we need to read and grow every day in our spiritual life, not just in our personal development or in the business world or in the physical and athletic world, but in our spiritual life too, and that starts with prayer.

00:12:31.844 --> 00:12:40.095
Going back to the speech For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment.

00:12:40.495 --> 00:12:44.931
You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives.

00:12:44.931 --> 00:12:53.615
I want to speak directly to you briefly, because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you.

00:12:53.615 --> 00:13:05.038
How many of you are sitting here now about to cross the stage and are thinking about the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career stage and are thinking about the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career.

00:13:05.038 --> 00:13:15.701
Some of you may go on to lead very successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.

00:13:15.701 --> 00:13:27.187
I can tell you that my beautiful wife, isabel, would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother.

00:13:27.187 --> 00:13:34.652
I'm on the stage today and able to be the man I am because I have a wife who leans into her vocation.

00:13:34.652 --> 00:13:55.783
I'm beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife and embrace one of the most important titles of all homemaker.

00:13:56.845 --> 00:13:58.326
Oh, that was the kicker.

00:13:58.326 --> 00:14:00.528
Oh that was the kicker.

00:14:00.528 --> 00:14:07.052
That was the line that sent the liberals raging off the deep end.

00:14:07.052 --> 00:14:17.258
Homemaker Important title of all Homemaker.

00:14:17.258 --> 00:14:23.451
Does he want to regulate women back to the 1950s and 60s, when men would come home from work and beat their wives?

00:14:23.451 --> 00:14:24.897
Is that what he wants?

00:14:24.897 --> 00:14:38.273
That's what one radical lib in a Reddit column I read during my research wrote, and then it went on to a 25-page argument back and forth between people.

00:14:38.994 --> 00:14:45.269
Holy smokes between people, holy smokes.

00:14:45.269 --> 00:14:59.789
Well, for all of that, when you read the transcript and you watch the actual full video of Buckner's speech, you will see that the applause of the crowd lasted for 18 seconds after he finished that paragraph.

00:14:59.789 --> 00:15:03.149
I think that stands for the truth on this matter.

00:15:03.149 --> 00:15:07.427
Back to the speech in another quote.

00:15:07.427 --> 00:15:11.970
She is the primary educator to our children.

00:15:11.970 --> 00:15:19.533
She is the one who ensures I never let football or my business become a distraction from that of a husband and father.

00:15:19.533 --> 00:15:28.131
She is the person that knows me best, at my core, and it is through our marriage that, lord willing, we will both attain salvation.

00:15:28.131 --> 00:15:32.407
Right on, right on.

00:15:32.407 --> 00:15:44.740
Hubba hubba To the gentlemen here today part of what plagues our society is this lie that has been told to you that men are not necessary in the home or in our communities.

00:15:46.644 --> 00:15:51.763
As men we set the tone of the culture, and when that is absent, disorder, dysfunction and chaos set in.

00:15:51.763 --> 00:15:57.403
This absence of men in the home is what plays a large role in the violence we see all around the nation.

00:15:57.403 --> 00:16:10.294
Other countries do not have nearly the same absentee father rates as we find in the US, and a correlation could be made in their drastically lower violence rates as well.

00:16:10.294 --> 00:16:20.049
Be unapologetic in your masculinity, fighting against the cultural emasculation of men.

00:16:20.049 --> 00:16:21.985
Do hard things.

00:16:21.985 --> 00:16:24.206
Never settle for what is easy.

00:16:24.206 --> 00:16:34.148
You might have a talent that you don't necessarily enjoy, but if it glorifies God, maybe you should lean into that over something that you might think suits you better.

00:16:34.148 --> 00:16:39.086
Yes, sir, do the hard things.

00:16:39.086 --> 00:16:42.729
Show up for your children each and every day.

00:16:44.461 --> 00:17:02.572
Going back to the speech for our last quote, make no mistake, you're entering into mission territory in a post God world, but you were made for this and with God by your side and a constant striving for virtue within your vocation, you too can be a saint.

00:17:02.572 --> 00:17:09.513
Christ is King to the heights and with that, folks, that's the conclusion.

00:17:09.513 --> 00:17:14.797
I don't see anything wrong with Mr Buckner's speech.

00:17:14.797 --> 00:17:26.401
In fact, he's talking about living virtue within our vocations and that we too, with a lot of prayer and God by our side, we too can be saints.

00:17:26.401 --> 00:17:33.097
This fits right into the Mojo Academy, where we are trying to build a flourishing life by living the virtues.

00:17:33.097 --> 00:17:36.554
So again, I don't see anything wrong with the speech.

00:17:36.554 --> 00:17:41.517
He spoke the truth and that seemed to trigger the left and the radical left.

00:17:41.517 --> 00:17:43.570
But what am I saying?

00:17:43.570 --> 00:17:53.462
They are all anymore the radical left, the Scoop Jacksons and the Daniel Patrick Moynihans have left the stage long ago.

00:17:53.462 --> 00:17:55.748
They're all Bolsheviks now.

00:17:56.851 --> 00:18:02.127
So in today's Mojo Minute I will put a link in the show notes to listen to the full speech if you'd like.

00:18:02.127 --> 00:18:06.625
I think it's one of the very good commencement addresses in a long time.

00:18:06.625 --> 00:18:08.388
I don't think it's flawless.

00:18:08.388 --> 00:18:11.113
It talks about the traditional Latin Mass.

00:18:11.113 --> 00:18:14.900
I'm not that big a fan of the traditional Latin Mass.

00:18:14.900 --> 00:18:20.057
You can say the Novus Ordo Mass just fine if it's done reverentially.

00:18:20.057 --> 00:18:24.194
But he is indeed right on the big things.

00:18:24.194 --> 00:18:30.157
We are living in mission territory and in a post-God and post-Christian world nowadays.

00:18:30.157 --> 00:18:43.695
So to live a flourishing life we will have to keep up our prayer life, we will have to live the virtues, we'll have to keep searching for the truth and, as always, we'll have to keep fighting the good fight.

00:18:47.885 --> 00:18:49.132
Thank you for joining us.
