Brad Thor is one of the most thrilling writers in the world of espionage and cloak-and-dagger novels. A New York Times bestselling author, Brad Thor has devoted most of his life to writing stories filled with tension, adventure, and suspense. From his early years to his successful writing career, this blog will take a comprehensive look at the life and works of the prolific writer Brad Thor.
Brad's early life
Brad Thor was born on August 21, 1969, in Chicago, Illinois. He went to the University of Southern California, where he earned a degree in creative writing. After graduating and before becoming a novelist, Brad was the award-winning creator, producer, writer, and host of the critically acclaimed national public television series, Traveling Lite. However, his passion for writing novels about espionage and counterterrorism led him to leave his lucrative career and pursue a full-time job as a novelist.
Thor's first novel, "The Lions of Lucerne," published in 2002, introduced the world to his main protagonist, Scot Harvath. Set in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the book follows Harvath, a former Navy SEAL, as he embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue the kidnapped president of the United States. Over the years, Thor has written over 20 novels, all of which feature Harvath as the main character. His books have been translated into over 20 languages and have sold millions of copies worldwide.
One thing that sets Brad Thor's writing apart is his incredible attention to detail. His novels are meticulously researched, and he spends months conducting interviews and traveling to the locations where his stories take place. Thor's research and attention to detail give his books a sense of authenticity and realism that is hard to find in other thrillers. From the technology used by the characters to the tactics used in dangerous situations, every aspect of Thor's novels feels grounded in reality.
On writing "Faction" instead of Fiction
Here's how Brad explains writing "Faction," instead of Fiction.
(this is taken from a Fox News radio interview with Guy Benson)
I think that details are the bedrock of a good thriller. I think people will suspend disbelief, but you need to get the smallest details correct because those are little bumps if you’re reading. If somebody makes a mistake, like puts a safety on a Glock or anything like that, that throws a reader who knows that’s not right. They trust you to get everything right. So, I pride myself on doing a lot of research. If I can’t go to a particular country I will talk to somebody who has operated in that country.
Also, one pretty cool thing that Brad was able to do was in 2008 in Afghanistan, he was able to shadow a Black Ops team to research his thriller, The Apostle.
How very cool is that?!!!
Now I haven't read the Apostle but I have already downloaded into my Audible library. lol
